Erika Lust Explores The Other Side Of Porn: That Of The Women You Jerk Off To!

Have you ever watched porn, and wondered what it would be like if it played from a woman’s perspective? Ya, thought so. Well, Erika Lust did just that. She decided that most of you are watching porn wrong. And, to be quite honest, we kind of agree with her on this one.

Now, before you get your cardboard signs, protesting against her take of porn, just hear the woman out, we did, and well it was eye opening to say the least.

Erika Lust is not your, typical, run of the mill porn director. She wants to re-educate, re-sensitize the way your brain has been programmed to watch porn, and how you interact in your personal sex life.

Following, is our interview with Erika Lust:

Erika-Lust-Xconfessions

Hi Erika, for those who don’t know you, how would you describe yourself?

Hi! I’m an erotic film maker, a mom to two girls, I’m from Sweden but I’ve been living and working in Barcelona for over ten years.

What made you get into porn?

What I had seen in mainstream porn didn’t do it for me. There was no attention to the female perspective, to female pleasure. There was no attention to any cinematography either, so I thought, why not combine storytelling and cinematography with explicit sex?

Coming from a cinematic background that makes total sense to me, now if you could change one thing about the porn industry what would it be?

One major thing I would like to see seriously addressed is the fact that a lot of young people’s first experience with sex is through internet porn, and what is mainstream in porn today can often be violent and misogynist with women presented as objects of pleasure rather than receiving it. There’s one type of extreme sex that’s being held up as “normal”, that will come up as the first google hit if you search porn. The problem is not those sex acts, but the problem is that they’re presented as normative, mainstream. I think that’s unfair on many levels.

What has been the general response towards your porn?

Generally, the response is really positive, and it’s really nice to hear if my films have made people happy. Many do write to me that my films have had a positive impact on their sex lives and on their well-being in general.

Let’s put a quick little video here that gives people an idea of what your videos consist of. Here’s a quick taste, teaser.

How have feminists reacted towards what you do?

There are some who are very sex-positive, enjoy adult films and like what I do, and those who do think that all explicit sex on film is horrible and sexist.

They are entitled to that opinion, feminists don’t have to think as one collective brain. But personally I think that approach is quite sex-negative. You can question and challenge the state of porn without condemning everyone who thinks differently. I think it’s all about talking about it, and having more voices in adult films from lots of different perspectives instead of the majority being that of men.

What differentiates your porn from say the typical male driven porn film?

Mine are driven by females, a narrative, creativity and lust. So you can expect to see a lot of buildup to the sex as well as a context in which people are having sex. It’s not that average “girl on couch, let’s fuck her” scenario. I think narratives are sexy! And I think a lot of people find that the sex in my films is more realistic than in mainstream films. And you’ll see real pleasure, and attention to female desires and pleasure as well.

What is your perspective of porn today, the role it plays in our society and where would you like to see it go? (I know kind of a loaded question) 🙂

I think the current state of internet porn shouldn’t exactly be censored but the playing field has to be leveled. It’s a huge cultural genre and I’d like to see it talked about more in general, because kids who grow up on the internet don’t really have a choice in what is being held up to them as the norm in porn. I’d like to see more women in active decision-making roles as well, behind the camera. More attention to female pleasure and more realistic representations of both men and women.

If you didnt enter the porn industry, what industry would you see yourself in?

I guess I see what I do as an alternative to the “porn industry”, but an alternative that is not just about sex, but about filmmaking and story telling as well. So I see myself as being in the adult cinema industry, really! So if I didn’t film explicit sex, I think I would be doing some other type of film making.

How many shoots do you do in a week, a month, a year?

We release two XConfession short films per month. Every three months we film six films in one week, so one short film per day, usually. It’s pretty intense, and it requires lots of pre-and post production. But I love it.

How do you feel about production companies who shoot a ton of scenes daily?

Many companies are responsible for a lot of exploitation and awful working conditions…if they shoot plenty of scenes I hope they take the proper responsibility that goes along with that – to create a fair work place and so on, make consent a top priority and make sure the actors are healthy, happy and there for the right reasons. Some people think they can get away with anything just because they might technically not be breaking a law, but well, their time is going to come as well.

What inspires you to create a film, what motivates you or drives you?

Thanks to XConfessions I get great inspiration from people allover their world, and their amazing fantasies, memories and stories. Some of the entries we get on the site are just crazy good. Apart from that I’m inspired a lot by new creators erotica, like the Quite Delightful Project, check it out, it’s a new erotic mag for women by women. I love Vex Ashley and a Four Chambered Heart.

I heard that, and correct me if I’m wrong, Swedish people are extremely open with their sexuality, but have seemingly awkward social interactions, is that true?

haha yes that sounds about right. We have a long history of sex education and most are not really ashamed to talk about sex, but no I wouldn’t say we are “extremely” open with our sexuality…what would that be, like having sex in the street? And most of us might not be great minglers at parties. But having said that, there are a lot of crazy-ass swedes as well!

Also, I heard Swedish women do not like to let the man pay on their date, why do you think that is?

In general people split the bills there, they pay for their own drinks in bars etc so if someone tries to buy you dinner you might feel as if owe them something. Which a lot of women there don’t want. When you become their boyfriend, you will be allowed to pay, but you can expect them to return the favor the next weekend! They don’t really play by any date-rules…

Do you think your female empowerment in porn stems from you growing up in Sweden?

Well, I think it did encourage me to think about it more openly, Sweden has come a long way with gender progress, equality and also, talking about sex. But working with amazing, sex-positive powerful performers is the main source of the female empowerment you see in my films. Female sexuality is a lot more powerful than a lot of mainstream porn will have you believe. It’s a force of nature, the source of life!

Have you ever watched the show “Welcome To Sweden”? I actually enjoyed it, and found it entertaining.

Haha yes! Gotta love a bit of Will Ferrel. And many of those stereo-types are true… the love for cinnamon buns and the heavy drinking at crayfish parties, guilty as charged.

Finally, would you call yourself the hippie of the digital porn world? (You know, the peace, love, and natural beauty of the body)

Yeah man, that’s far out dude! Haha! Thank you, I like it.
